Golf Digest “Hot List” Taps Leading Michigan Golf Instructor For Equipment Analysis

Jason Guss works with Golf Digest editors in evaluating equipment performance

Gaylord, MI – Jason Guss, director of golf performance for the Rick Smith/Jason Guss Golf Academy at Treetops Resort in northern Michigan, was selected to be part of an advisory committee on equipment analysis for Golf Digest’s popular “Hot List” issue.

Guss, who has been recognized among the game’s “Best Young Teachers” by Golf Digest, was part of a group that included scientists, retailers, teachers and amateur players, all who evaluated the leading equipment in the game for Golf Digest providing insight and evaluations on performance including Look/Sound/Feel.

The publication’s 10th annual review of the “Hot List”, which is the most highly anticipated editorial project Golf Digest undertakes, appears in the March 2013 issue. Of the hundreds of clubs that were evaluated this year, 103 earned their way onto the 2013 Hot List, and 23 brands are represented in nine categories: Drivers, Fairway Woods, Hybrids, Game Improvement Irons, Super Game Improvement Irons, Players Irons, Wedges, Blade Putters and Mallet Putters.

“To have the privilege of working with Golf Digest, one of the leading golf publications in the industry, and to have them use me as a resource to evaluate equipment is an honor,” says Guss. “To see and be a part of this process was impressive and the work and authenticity that Golf Digest has put into this project will truly help the consumer make the best decisions when purchasing equipment.”

Guss spent three days testing the top golf products selected by the magazine including the Titleist, Taylor Made, Nike, Ping, Adams, Cleveland, and Callaway brands to name a few. Equipment was tested and immediately reported on to a moderator. Clubs were also custom-fitted for the evaluators, which helped to make the analysis as fair as possible.

“They custom-fitted drivers for us to each of our specs to give us the right loft, shaft flex and face setting which really helped in our evaluations,” explains Guss. “We also hit clubs back to back so we could tell right away any differences, as opposed to hitting your club and then a week later hitting a buddie’s club.”
