Gaylord – Golf Mecca and More

So you have seen the many accolades and articles about how great the golf is in the Gaylord area, but what exactly is it that makes Gaylord the renowned “Golf Mecca” and the best golf destination in the Midwest?  Well, the answer is lots of things actually!

Spectacular Scenic Vistas
Most people are unaware that Gaylord has the highest elevation of any city in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. This makes for some tremendous views of our northern Michigan landscape. Many of our courses offer elevated tee boxes and rolling terrain, allowing you to hit “down” to the green, which is really fun and allows for some serious hang time. Some of the best views are found at Otsego Resort’s Tribute, Treetops’ Smith, Fazio and Jones courses and The Lakes course, part of The Loon Golf Resort. For a special treat and a great hang time contest, try Threetops.

A New Food Vibe and Quaint Town
Over the past two years, the City of Gaylord completed a total overhaul of the downtown area which has led to tremendous growth in dining establishments. After an exhilarating day on the links trying a new course or playing an old favorite, nothing beats checking out a new restaurant. For some tasty barbecue try the Iron Pig Smokehouse.  A great Michigan craft selection and eclectic hearty food can be found at Tap Room 32Alpine Tavern is known for classic pizza, sandwiches and more in a convenient location with ample outdoor seating. Last fall, the iconic Big Buck Brewery reopened with an amazing new menu, tasty craft beers and the perfect setting for large groups. Also new to the scene is Porter House, Pine Squirrel and Bell Iron Grille, all south of town.

Variety of Courses
As you know, the Gaylord Golf Mecca is a collection of 15 championship 18 hole courses. Most people have heard of the biggies like Treetops Resort, Otsego Resort, The Loon Golf Resort and Black Lake Golf Club, but the Mecca also has some stellar stand alones including Gaylord Golf Club, Indian River Golf Club, Michaywe and The Natural. Over the past 3 years each of these courses have completed some impressive improvements and made their courses even better! These are fun, playable courses with impeccable conditions.

The Multitude of Wildlife Seen on the Course
Because we are in such a pristine area of Michigan bordering on copious amounts of forest land, wildlife is plentiful.  It is pretty common to hold up on a shot to let deer or turkey cross the fairway before proceeding. You can also count on seeing wood peckers, eagles and occasionally an elk.  Yes, northern Michigan is home to one of largest free ranging elk herds in the Midwest. This makes the round even more memorable than just hanging out with your golf buddies.

Our location
Gaylord is located smack dab in the middle of northern Michigan, which some would say is the best of Michigan. In addition to all 15 courses being within 30 minutes of each other, it is just plain easy to get to Gaylord since we are conveniently located at the crossroads of I-75 and M-32. What makes the trip even sweeter is the ability to explore all of northern Michigan.  Gaylord is centrally located, a short drive from some other great communities and within an hour of two of Michigan’s Great Lakes, Michigan and Huron.

It’s clear to see there are countless reasons for Gaylord being regarded as a true Mecca of golf.  From the championship courses to pristine landscape and thriving community, the Gaylord area offers every golfer the experience of a lifetime.
